First Assembly - Welcome to Country
February 5, 2018
It's a Spensley Street tradition, something we do for the first Assembly of the year. This morning we invited Wurundjeri elder, Uncle Colin Hunter, to perform a Welcome to Country with a smoking ceremony for the whole school.Â
A smoking ceremony involves burning native plants to produce smoke; it's believed to have cleansing properties and the ability to ward off bad spirits.Â
Many parents and carers joined all of our students and staff in the courtyard to experience the ceremony. The students were impressively attentive and asked excellent questions when they had the chance to talk with Uncle Colin. It was a wonderful way to mark the start of the school year.Â
Thank you to our music teacher, Pam Westwood, for arranging for the ceremony to take place.Â
We hold an Assembly each Monday morning at 9am and we invite parents and carers to join us.
