MATHS TEACHING AND LEARNING
At Spensley Street, we believe that every student can learn mathematics to a high level.
We aim to ensure that all children develop a positive attitude towards mathematics, fluency with mathematical processes, and the ability to confidently apply their maths skills to real-life situations.

Our highly skilled teachers engage in regular professional learning in how to teach maths effectively and how to ensure high levels of student engagement and achievement.

Our approach is learner-centred and developmentally appropriate, building on teachers' knowledge of individual students gained through regular and thoughtful assessment.

Mathematics at Spensley Street involves authentic problem-solving tasks, games, investigations, and active, collaborative learning experiences.

Our goal is to inspire, educate and empower children to become successful, confident mathematicians.
ACTIVE, COLLABORATIVE LEARNING
CURRICULUM AND ASSESSMENT
Our teachers work in teams to develop class programs based on the Victorian Curriculum. The Victorian Curriculum F–10 is the new curriculum for Victorian schools, incorporating the
Australian Curriculum.
Detailed information can be found at http://victoriancurriculum.vcaa.vic.edu.au/mathematics/curriculum/f-10
Teachers constantly monitor student progress, and assessment information is used in curriculum planning, student goal-setting and reporting to parents.

Assessment methods include teacher-designed assessments and observations, attitude surveys, one-to-one interviews and standardised tests.

SSPS MATHS BOOKLETS
These booklets explain many of the number-based mathematics concepts that are taught to students throughout their time at primary school. The purpose of these booklets is to help our school community understand what we teach, so that parents and carers can best support the learning of mathematical concepts at home.
We hope that it will also be a useful resource for students as they move on to secondary school.
