This was our first show for some years and it blew us all away!

Art for Change grew out of a recent unit of work where students explored the contributions of "changemakers".

No-one really knew what to expect but, when a load of sand was delivered to the multi-purpose room, it got our attention!

Originally planned to run for one night only, the response to Thursday night's exhibition was so strong that we gave our community other chances to see the works on Friday after school and again on Monday morning.

So many parents. carers, grandparents and community members came to visit and everyone expressed appreciation for the artistic vision and hard work of our wonderful art teachers, Daniel and Louise.

Congratulations to all of the students and to Daniel and Louise - and thank you to parents and carers for their generous assistance and, of course, their response to the art!

Beautiful weather, lots of people - Friday evening on the grassed area.

It was a relaxed event, with food choices ranging from fish and chips to radishes! Thanks to everyone who came along.

Congratulations to these students for their fine work at Assembly this morning. Taking the opportunity to polish their public speaking skills, Temi and Grace hosted the Assembly, Myrsine performed the Acknowledgement of Country, Grace & Allie encouraged the girls to play football for Fitzroy and Emily & Molly spoke about the netball team, the Spensley Sprites.

Thanks to the 65 people (half of them children) who came along yesterday to help at our first working bee for the year. Lots of tasks were accomplished including shifting a huge pile of tanbark to make the playground safer, oiling the stage and decks, cleaning the drains and gardening. Special thanks to Ivan and the Environment Committee, and Georgia, for organising the day. Well done kids - you did a great job.

Congratulations to our Lawn Bowls team of Dawn, Lola, James, Jeslynn and Myrsine, on winning the Chris Atkins Shield. The perpetual trophy was presented by Peter Hille, Bowls Development Manager for Fitzroy Victoria Bowls Club, at Assembly this week.

We also heard a brilliant speech at Assembly, from Year 5 student Mischa Fraillon, who gave us some powerful arguments about why we should be looking after our belongings at school. If we never claim our windcheaters and lunchboxes, there will be dire consequences for the environment.

It's a Spensley Street tradition, something we do for the first Assembly of the year. This morning we invited Wurundjeri elder, Uncle Colin Hunter, to perform a Welcome to Country with a smoking ceremony for the whole school.

A smoking ceremony involves burning native plants to produce smoke; it's believed to have cleansing properties and the ability to ward off bad spirits.

Many parents and carers joined all of our students and staff in the courtyard to experience the ceremony. The students were impressively attentive and asked excellent questions when they had the chance to talk with Uncle Colin. It was a wonderful way to mark the start of the school year.

Thank you to our music teacher, Pam Westwood, for arranging for the ceremony to take place.

We hold an Assembly each Monday morning at 9am and we invite parents and carers to join us.
